Question All-in-one GPS Systems

I like the idea of an single compact unit for GPS, e.g. Garmin Street Pilot III etc.

I also like the idea of the PDA based systems so you can store contacts, MP3 files etc., but I'm not keen on all the peripherals which go with it.

However, it now seems you can buy the best of both worlds in an all-in-one system

http://www.gpsw.co.uk/details/prod1176.html

Has anyone any views on the Garmin GPS system in comparision to the PDA systems (Tom Tom or Desitinator)?

As a frequent traveller, I'm pretty sure I could pick this up at Dixons in Manchester/Gatwick/Heathrow Airport for around £500, which suits my pocket more, provided it comes with a fully unlocked European map.

The prices at Dixons at the Airports are no cheaper than their High Street shops.
The last item I bought there "Tax Free" was exactly the same price in my local one when I got home.

With a bit of price research first, you can pick up a bargain e.g. Fuji Finepix 601 is £289.79 in the high street, but was £243 in Gatwick last week!! Generally, the saving is 17.5%; a VAT free price.

I currently have a garmin GPS3 (main road basemap) but no uploadable b roads etc

I am sorely tempted by the Garmin ique3600
but I'm not sure its robust enough to mount on my vfr
like i currently do with my gps3

but here is a good price if you are looking

http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=IQUE3600

I might go for the gpsV as it offers routing built in with uploadale
detailed maps and the robustness to mount on the VFR

cheers

Stephen

Hmm, bashful, yes, the price of 409 GBP wouldn't be too bad, were it not for the maps etc. This is the price for the US version.
The UK version is a mere 586 GBP, which is 43% more expensive.
It might still be a good option, but beware these prices. Rip-off UK!

later tonight (or tomorrow, if I don't get home tonight) I will be the proud possessor if Wiz's fantastic offer (Keith - did it go out on time?).

I will let you know how it works but I have high expectations.
