hello im new to this site but i have a problem with my 88 vfr400 nc24 which i have just bought off ebay :( the guy who was selling it put a link to a video of it runnin and it sounded shweeet however he had it runnin and then it just cut out and he said hed had traced the fault to a suspect cdi so i had a word with one of my friends who owns a bike business told him the symptoms and he said cdi too and he had one,so i bought the bike with intention to have a look myself , it would light the oil and neutral lights but not turn over , i checked the fuses and the 10 amp starter fuse was blown so i changed it and it started woo hoo i thought but no after 15 seconds it blew again and cut out with the cdi box smoking ??? i later found a nut loose and rattling around in the fuse box could this have caused a short ??? now with a bigger fuse it will start but yhe cdi smokes a lot is the damage done to the cdi now :club: :dunce: :club:
Firstly, hello, good morning and welcome the VFR club. Almost everyone is mad, but you’ll find that we’re a pretty helpful bunch too. Someone much more knowledgeable than me will be along to give you a view in a little while, but that sounds like a bike with a serious problem to me. When you’ve got it sorted, I am sure you’ll enjoy it.
My, aren't you a trusting soul...I hope you didn't pay much for the bike! I've never heard of a smoking CDI, so all I can suggest is that somebody's had a go at the wiring harness and really screwed it up. CDI boxes are not cheap, and I think you will soon tire of replacing them. Might be better to buy a secondhand wiring loom and replace yours with it. Yes, it's a bit extreme, but electrical problems are a bitch when you have no idea what's already been done to "fix" the problem.
If it's not the wiring, then it could be a faulty reg/rec allowing overvoltage into the system--in theory that could bugger the CDI. Might be worth the investment in a new reg/rec--before you fry another CDI. :dunno: Good luck!
Ciao,
now with a bigger fuse it will start but yhe cdi smokes a lot is the damage done to the cdi now :club: :dunce: :club:NOOOOOO  ................original fuse ratings are chosen for a good reason. ;) There's only so much current an item will draw for normal use, if it starts to draw more current then something's a bit amiss. :( If a fuse keeps blowing, then it's doing it for a damned good reason and needs investigating rather than just ram a higher rated fuse in. :B Luckily the post isn't about how your bike's wiring has gone up in flames.
Go with JZH's suggestions. :) Until you get it running safely, you can't really test out the charging circuit but it might be worth getting a new rectifier/regulator.
