I was browsing the DVLA site and came across this statement:

THE BRITISH STANDARD
The British Standard sets out the physical characteristics on the number plate. This includes:

Visibility
Strength
Reflectivity
The British Standard also requires that a number plate must be marked with the following information: -

The British Standard Number (currently BS AU 145d)
The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier. (The company who actually make the number plate.)
The name and postcode of the supplying outlet. (The 'supplying outlet' is taken to mean a company whose business consists wholly or partly of selling number plates.)
A non-reflective border and the Euro-symbol with the national identification letters are optional additions.
There shall be no other markings or material contained on the number plate.

Now, does the British Standard define what is required by law ? If so, the last sentence implies that we cannot put our "www.hondavfrclub" sticker on the numberplate.

Any thoughts ?

Does this mean the broad strip across the centre of my plate with the m/c dealers' name and details is illegal as supplied?
If challenged, I suppose I could peel off the club sticker, but the dealer 'ad' would be more difficult. We obviously need clarification, from Tricky perhaps?

I heard something on radio about this & am pretty sure it's only recently been introduced. I think it's to stop illegal number plates by having to have plate manufacturers name/postcode on the plate. Laws are rarely retrospective so those with dealer names, etc etc on plate already should be ok.

Just makes you realise that politicians & their advisors have too much time on their hands doesn't it, if this is all they got to worry about?

The 'modern' number plates have a slightly changed font and is also slightly smaller also allowing a 50cm odd reduction in the distance from which it has to be read to pass the eye test..20m

You can have a single flag from your country of origin or the GB sticker as a lot do...

All plates made up now should contain the name of the maker of the plate AND their post code..I think this is an attempt to stop the sale of the illegal unreadable plates as it traces the maker (if of course they put the correct details!)

Technically putting anything on the number plate is an offence... but I have a slogan on the bottom of mine!

I think that you will find, that the new No. Plate legislation, only applies to plates made after Sept. 2001:)

Alan's post included:

There shall be no other markings or material contained on the number plate.

Does that mean I should take my registration number of the plate???:D :D :D :D

Well I've put the club URL on the bottom of my plate to cover the dealers details. I didn't see why they should get free advertising.

If anyone says anything against the practice I guess I'll have to remove it - temporarily of course:D
