Depends really on what you are planning to do with it?

If it is literally to connect to the telly and watch DVD's then it's not worth spending a fortune on. You could get a perfectly good one for £50 or thereabouts.
Most of the medium priced players are able to play CD/CDR/CDRW discs etc and can cope with MP3 music files that sort of thing.
If you are planning to connect it up to an A/V amp and surround sound speakers then you are going to want things like DTS etc.

Horses for courses.

Like Smiffy says, depends what you want. Also consider what size room you want to fill with sound. In my lounge I use a recordable dvd through a 500 watt av amp and 5 speakers plus a sub. But I have a great little Grundig all in one system in the bedroom. Has a built in dts, 5.1 decoder, with it's own amp, and produces good sound and spatial seperation. Cost me less than £200 a couple of years ago so could probably be had for half that now, which would be money well spent.

Failing that you could always put dvd's through the PS2, picture's good but sound is governed by the TV, unless you run it through your Hi-Fi.

If it's just for watching goto Asda and buy a Paciffic for £29 plays anything
Goto Here (http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/forums/default.asp?Forum=176) search for your model and use the Hack to make it Multi-Region :yo:

Just seen this thread - timely! My old Technics SLP110 CD player has just died and as we don't have a DVD player (except PS2 :PUKE: ) I thought we might as well get a DVD player that can play CD's/MP3's as well. It'll link up to my ageing Technics SAGX690 amp and route thro' my 5.1 surround speakers in a narrow living room. But we're broke and eventually I want to get a hard drive DVD/recorder to record off Sky as well as play music but that's in the future. For now I need a decent quality, but cheap DVD/CD/MP3 player to route thro' my hi-fi - any suggestions? :h

I am currently considering either the Pioneer 220 DVD recorder or the Pioneer 420H HDD/DVD recorder. Or I may wait a year or so until the products are more mature as there is not one on the market yet that does everything I would like it to.

Gozzy, I was hoping for a trusted members to give me a recommendation rather than rely on a website who are probably paid to over-rate certain makes/models. ;)

You trying to say I'm not trusted :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :} :}

As said if you just want something to watch DVD's with get yerself to Asda
:yo: (I and many thousands swear by them)

If you want something better.....you pays your money and takes your choice
I've also got a big fancy Panosonic Home theatre system (all you could get at the time), but would look for something a lot cheaper nowadays

Have a look at Richer Sounds :

http://www.richersounds.com/home.php?cda=frontpage

They are normally a good benchmark for players / costs.

I like the Toshiba offerings at about £60 as they get rave reviews and are not silly money. Really cheap ones (i.e. some names you've never heard of) will be OK but will not have the sonic / picture quality of better ones. Having said that you probably won't notice unless you do a back to back test.

This is a pertinent point if you have a decent CD separate that you want to replace with a DVD player - a cheap one won't cut the mustard if connected to decent HiFi kit (if you can tell the difference between HiiI set-ups - some people can't).

A have a Samsung 709 and recently bought a Toshiba SD330 (Richer Sounds). Both decent brands but the Tosh is clearly better than the Samsung in all departments. I did do a back to back test and could tell (using a 32" widescreen TV and 5.1 set-up).

Best bet IMHO is to buy a good make / model at a knock-down price. Unless you have the ultimate Plasma screen / audio set up, £50 - £100 will get you fab quality kit.

In terms of features, most will play CDR, CDRW etc. Multi-region is handy but only if buying imported discs.

Just bought a DVD player from Argos, does everything, plays everything and is multi region as standard.

Small and compact and now reduced to 24.99

Bargain me thinks

Throw all the separates away like i did and get a Bose 38.
Only one down side. Mrs schosh went spare when she found out how much.
Well worth it though.

Bought a new television couple of weeks back and a new Sony DVD player was part of the package. Surplus to requirements as I already have a DVD recorder, so my wife advertised it on her school noticeboard. List price around £75, available online for around £55, advertised it for £50 and took £45. Not bad for a region 2-only machine :) Still, probably better built than the Aldi specials although whether that matters in practice is anyone's guess!

Who needs eBay with customers like that?

Just bought a SONY DVD/VCR combo SLV-900 model. Really good £125 in currys.

Can't copy DVD's to tape but hell who wants to these days anyway ;)

Great quality and appears to be able to play anything round flat and silver that you slip into it. :}

OR

Philips Jackrabbit 4 (http://www.simply.co.uk/productinformation/49987/WW/PHILIPS_JACKRABBIT_4_CDRW_DVD_MP3_PLAYER_USB_2.0/index.htm)

This unit is £79.00 (including VAT) from Simply Computers. It is dual purpose, connect to your PC via USB 2.0 and it is a DVD/CD writer, connect to your TV via SCART, S-Video or Composite video and you have a DVD Player, you can also connect it to your stereo to play music CDs, MP3 etc. etc. You get an infra-red remote with it as well.

I also understand that it only reqires 12V input from the power supply so quite simple to wire up for use in a vehcle too I expect.

Brilliant bit of kit IMHO, I ordered one yesterday. (Free postage during December).
