Myself I have a Sony Network Walkman, a very nice piece of kit it is too though a little dated and having to convert the format of mp3s to store on it is a bit of a pain.
Experience with the Sony and this whole format thing kind of put me off these copyright format devices although the iPod has always been strangely drawing for me, not enough to buy one though ... until yesterday!
My mate bought one along with an icelink kit. He brought it round and we fitted it to his Mini Cooper, it basically replaces the CD changer but has a capacity of a lot more tracks.. So, he has a really very nice portable mp3 player and a slick device for the car too.
Being impressionable, I'll probably be ordering one today...
although the iPod has always been strangely drawing for me,
Then you must make yourself aware of this study which has been reported in the ever accurate and serious e-journal The Rockall Times. ;)
Millions at risk as iPod cancer panic sweeps planet
White earphones can kill: Official
by Jim Magilton
iPod users are at risk of being afraid of cancer, according to a report commissioned by Microsoft. A survey of 1500 randomly-chosen iPod users were asked "If you were told that using an iPod increased your chances of developing cancer, would it worry you?" Almost 98 per cent of respondents said yes. Asked exactly the same question, 1500 people who did not own or use the chic digital music player answered no.
"The evidence is overwhelming and hugely persuasive," said Missy Oldacre of independent pollsters One Rotten Apple. "Millions of iPod users are more likely to be susceptible to cancer scares involving iPods than the population at large. And remember, cancer is a killer which causes a lingering and painful death. The only way to avoid the risk of worrying about iPod-related cancer stories is to use an alternative product, such as a player compatible with MSN Music."
The release of the report coincides with Microsoft's launch of an advertising campaign to promote their new music download service in direct competition to Apple's iTunes. One of the Steven Soderbergh-directed ads shows Johnny Depp in a physician's white coat downloading a song at a MSN terminal in an internet cafe while he waits for his e-burger with extra Intel inside. On leaving the restaurant he spots a man who is apparently suffering a heart attack. After Depp successfully resuscitates the man, he removes a pair of white earphones from the patient's ears and nods sadly.
Other ads include a vigorously dancing man with white earphones suffering an open fracture of the femur and a man with white earphones being mocked by a whore because his penis is small.
Executives at California-based Apple's headquarters were quickly on to the counterattack. Spokesman Ramon Vallejo, Associate Vice President Communications said, "What Microsoft doesn't want to talk about is that of all the children run down and killed by drunk drivers worldwide, 92 per cent are users of Microsoft's Windows operating system. That's a lot of dead children."
A straw poll conducted by The Rockall Times suggests that any health risk is a secondary concern to most users of digital music. The response from Tim, a 23-year-old bag designer, was typical: "This cancer download — is it free or do you have to pay 79p?"

I've been thinking about this too. I've been drawn away from the ipod & have seriously been considering an iriver. Take a look at cnet.com.

I have just taken delivery of the brand new generation 4 iPod with 40Gb....The sound quality and easy of use is outstanding. It has taken me a long time to get one of these having had several MP3 players, but I can truely say this is the best by a mile. I have bought an iTrip so I can tune my car radio and house stereos to it, thus giving me access to my entire music collection. At present I have only had the time to put 1803 songs on it...Which according to iTunes equates to 4.5 days of non stop listening!!!!
I know there are other out there now, Philips, iRiver and the like, but for pure and simple style you just cannot get any better than the iPod.
Sales pitch over....
IPOD :yo:
Does everything you could want from an MP3 player. And the combination with Sony Fontopias is the business.
One big advantage of the IPOD is the ability to use MP4 format (AAC). In short, this means you can vary the size and quality of the files. So you can rip a CD at MP3 quality which is ok, or you can do it at near CD quality which is a big improvement !
And seeing as you'll have either 20 or 40 gb, there's plenty of room for high quality files. I've recorded 30 albums so far and only used 3.5 gb.

MikeThe Nokia 6230 works pretty well as an mp3 player. Takes MMC.
Hi Mike
I have a Creative Labs NuVox [or MuVox? or similar/] - 256Mb - it holds about 6 CD's in Mpa format - I used it on our runs through Spain earlier this month. 1 AAA battery lasts for about 9 hours.
Not as much capacity as an Ipod, but very small - half the size of my phone [a Nokia 6310i] and not too expensive.
I ran mine via the Autocom headset in my helmet, not perfect but better than the whistle of air through vents, open visors etc.
SWMBO has her eye on it now I have a Nokia 6230 that can be used as an mp3 player.
I bought a 512Mb i-Audio 4 earlier in the year which goes for 18 hours on a single AAA battery and has good sound quality. The thing that's pants about it is that albums don't seem to play in the right order which is ok in most cases but a real ballache if you've got something where tracks lead into each other.
The market changes so much it's hard to make a recommendation but I used www.advancedmp3players.com (http://www.advancedmp3players.com) who I have to say are excellent and provide superb service and delivery. I also ordered another player for the girlfriends daughter and the service was excellent then also (so it wasn't a one-off) and the site has lots of details about the individual players along with plenty of reviews.
