Are there any tourists out there who have been to this area of Germany ?

If so - what's it like ? Any good as a venue for a short tour ?

Cheers.

I've ridden around the Sauerland quite a bit (the area to the South East of the Ruhr valley, and it's worth riding through there on the way to the Harz mountains.

Never got round to going to the Harz mountains, although I'd like to visit the V2 rocket factory in Nordhausen.

I did my ski instructors course there many moons ago, quite pleasant but not much more than that. Germany has much better to offer elsewhere.

I,ve got relatives that live in that area and have been several times.

Its got some pretty places (Goslar) and some good scenery.
I don't think the roads are particularly good for biking.

Basically its very clean and Gods waiting room for wealthy krauts!

I think "mountains" is a bit of an exaggeration for this area. Should be called the HArz Hills, really, or perhaps Harz Bumps?

Anway, as was said, Goslar is nice, and there is a little bit of history about the place, isn't Hamelyn one of the towns here, as in Pied Piper of Hamelyn??

Worth a visit if your in the area.

Harz Mountains, like you said isnt up to much as mountains go, but is nice if you like that type of thing we went there, must have been about 8 years ago. The roads were ok but as you went further and over the old Eastern boarder things changed it was similar to Bosnia with realy bad roads pot holes every where.
However Hameln is better I lived there for 6 years and ventured out to most places when I had the time.
Innsbruck is our favoured place proper mountains but took a whole day to get there from Hameln:)

I also did my ski instructors course there back in 69. Always wanted to go back & have a look at whats left of Brocken. It was the Russians electronic warfare center right on the top which was on the other side of the wire. They used to jam us on exercise as they couldn't break our encription codes.

But back to biking there are better road & areas in Germany.

The Eiffel mountains to the east of Luxembourg.

Nice little Town called Adenau, a wide variety of riding available, masses of accomodation etc etc ;)

....and the Schwarzwald (Black Forest) and the German Alps (especially around Berchtesgarten where Hitler's "Eagles Nest" is)

The lads have mentioned two good areas Schwarwald & The Eiffel.
The other I would recomend is Schwabische Alb centered on Reutlingen between Stuttgart & Ulm.
