I was checking my route in detail to do route-notes and found a couple of discrepancies on the return through Belgium - way-points 4&5 were "off-road, so to avoid the embarrassment of all the GPS-equipped VFRs veering off the tarmac and blindly following their instructions into the middle of a Belgian potato field, this version has them on solid tarmac.
It maybe that I'm the only tightass who hasn't got GPS or Autoroute, but, I bet there's others amongst us (sing with me brothers). So is there any chance of the proposed route's being posted on here as a picture for those of us .....shall we say - less endowed in the electronics department?
I obviously don't want anyone to go to great trouble or time consumeing tedium but speaking for myself I would find it of tremendous value & help.

I have to second that Wendle,
For some reason I can't open the links as well.
I'm running an old system and that's also frustrating.
Glad to hear I'm not alone Blue's. Last year I got a Route Finder CD. I thought it was exelent value for £8. When I loaded it I soon found out why it was cheap. It notes that the M1 is "under construction & soon to open"!!!!

No you're not. I tend to navigate by the seat of the pants and the ever decreasing circle method. You know, you eliminate all the possible routes first then get to the right one... so I'm hoping some kind soul will take pity and produce a word or other format version of the route that we can print.
So far I know where we're going but as to how we're getting there :( :dunno: :dunno:

Guys, did I not say several times that I was producing route notes to go in tank-bags?
I have done the outwards route, and am close to finishing the inwards bit.
Here are the notes as they stand in Word format - the blank column is intended to have diagrams (or "tulips" as they are known in rallying circles) of the trickier junctions, but whether I will get as far as that in the time available I don't know - as the diagrams have to be hand-drawn I would have then to save the pages as .pdf files and am not sure I have the hardware to do that - so I might have to print them here and turn up at Folkestone with couple of kilos of paper.
Booked on Eurotunnel
Out: 09:09 Sunday, 30th May (why is this not 9:06am?)
Return: 18:42 Saturday, 5th June
Anyone mind if I tag along behind FunkyBill et al?
Can someone confirm where you are stopping on the way down (Colmar?) and on the way back (Trier?), please?
Welcome Stuart,
We are stopping at the Ibis in Colmar centre on the way down (there is a link in this thread some where), but there are two strategies on the way back. Funky Bill et all are going via Trier and Ace, Toddy, Wendle and I are stopping at Strasbourg, details a couple of posts up.

There is no escape........
Just if you want to try Austrian goat-tracks on the VFR, you are on your own.......
As Gaucho says for the stop outwards, NH Hotel Trier for the return for most of us. They might be full, you can ring them on 0049 651 9280 (English spoken) or try any one of a dozen booking sites that will come up when you do an internet search.
Good luck - see you at Folkestone.

Sorry to mess the GPS fans about, but I saved the wrong route for the Neustift-Trier leg. It's only a few miles that are affected - but the old route would have us doubling back on the motorway to get fuel, and we get a few more miles of twisties in the Black Forest.
Word format notes also posted - I will delete the original Autoroute file
Booked into the Ibis in Colmar on the way down. The NH in Trier was full so I am booked into the Hotel Mercure on the way back.
Quite happy to stay off the goat-tracks but I may as well do a sweep of the South-East on the way down to Folkestone :)

Is there anyone stopping overnight in a single at the Wycliffe on Saturday, 29th May who would be willing to change to share a twin room with me?
Thanks

Route notes for the last leg, Trier-Calais, in Word
Bill,
did I not say several times that I was producing route notes to go in tank-bags
You did you did...I can't help it if I'm stupid...and thanks for those. Now if I could find the map...
Stuart,
No prob sharing at the wycliff if you want and I think Chris S might have a vacancy for a share at the Trier, so then we'd all be together again! :k ( but not really, OK? none of that see...)
No prob sharing at the wycliff if you want and I think Chris S might have a vacancy for a share at the TrierBrilliant. I have just rung the Wycliffe and done the necessary. Thanks for that.
I will PM Chris S and see if he is still open to offers :)

Amended Austria return day one GPS TT3 route
Can anyone confirm that they have had more than a confirmation that their booking has been received for the NH Trier?
I have been trying to get a response that the booking has been excepted but have had no reply. I am also unable to phone the hotel direct. :dunno:

What's the problem with the phone Chris? I had to do a major search to find the number, but got through to them no problem, and very polite and helpful they were too.
hi Bill,
I have not been able to find the number only the booking agency. I don't suppose you could let me know what it is?

If anyone's got any worries about the NH Trier hotel reservation, ring them on 0049 651 9280 - they speak good English. I checked and Brian and I are confirmed.
thanks Bill, as usual up to the mark!!

Sorry funkmiester, I led the others into this. I hadn't seen your earlier post about the grand work your doing on this.
Allow me to buy you a mini milk as a jesture of my appreciation. :k
Bill
Have just looked at (& printed off) your route files. They are great. My sincere thanks to you for the work you have put into this.

OK all....it's getting near. (exciting init!!) Anyone want to make a suggestion for meeting up on the way down to Folkstone on Saturday afternoon / evening? OK I will...
I was thinking of leaving here (Wokingham) about 4 pm picking up the M3 J4 at Bracknell (a la Mosel last year) and then M25 etc from there. Arrive in time for dinner, a couple of beers and an early-ish night ready for Sunday.
Open to alternatives of course....
If M4 / M3 is out of the way we can rendezvous in stages perhaps.

Sounds good mate,
I will be coming round the M25 from jct 16.
Where do you want to meet? :)
funkybill
26-05-2004, 23:11
Brian and I are meeting at Cherwell Valley services on the M40 at 4:30 so will be in Foilkestone about 6:30, via M25. I guess we will see you at The Wycliffe.
I have now done versions of the route notes with hand-drawn junction maps - I will copy as many as I can sensibly carry - I tried to save them in a form I could post them here but techno-fuckwitdom took over and I failed dismally, so it's down to the good old copier. Before you sing my praises too loudly, let's just see how accurate they are.........
Bill, I assume you going anti-clockwise round the M25. I will be heading clockwise (A41/M25/M20) with a couple of "deviations", planning to arrive in time for tiffin.
funkybill
26-05-2004, 23:40
Stuart - yes, much as I revel in the delights of the M25, on this occassion I think we will be taking the short route.
What's with the "deviations"? Interesting SM massage parlour at South Mimms services perhaps?
Hi Graham
What time will you get to the M3 J4 ? I will join you there.
There is a "Bird Cage" on a pond thing somewhere in Herts and an old Toll Booth somewhere in Kent I need to get pictures of.
I'm planning a "pretty" route, trying to avoid doing 200 miles of boring motorway, aiming to get to The Wycliffe at around 7pm, so hopefully will meet up there before hitting the town.

Hi ChrisS,
Maybe i could meet up with you there as well as were going from the same sort of area, or do you want to meet say at the Beaconsfield roundabout on the M40???
If you M40 types want to cut off the corner and head down the Marlow byepass then up to J10 on the M4, A329M to Bracknell and through to M3 J4, I can join you on the way at the first roundabout at the end of the A329 for instance.
I am flexible on time so if Bill and Brian are likely to be a bit later, - Cherwell Services at 4.30 would get you to Bracknell about 5.15 (?) - that's OK with me. B&Ts and Chris...what do you think?
There's nowhere to stop on the M25 / M3 junction so a meet from M25 would probably have to be at the A3 roundabout further on.

I'll check with my co-pilot.....Bill?
PS: Switzerland is not in the euro
Hi Graham,
is that the Coppid beach roundabout on the A318 or the Twin Bridges roundabout where it crosses the A329 ? 17.15 sounds fine to me.
Blues and Twos, if we go down the A404 perhaps we should meet some where on the A404 just after the Handicross roundabout on the M40 junction 4. there is a lay by about 200 meter passed the roundabout how about there at about 4.45
PS: Switzerland is not in the euro :eek:I though we weren't going into Cuckoo-land? I hope they have ATM's then.

Is that the cressex roundabout ?
seem to have lost my Bucks map. :(
Chris,
I was thinking it would probably be simpler just to go straiht to the first roundabout on the A329. Can't miss it and room to stop on left without getting in anyones way.
B&Ts,
Its near Cressex. The big bugger over the motorway. Can't miss it either! Laybye is just down the hill a bit on the 404 to Marlow.

That's great mate,
I will be at the layby @ 4.45 on Sat afternoon.
It is indeed the Cressex roundabout.
Hi Graham,
Got you !!
It is indeed the Cressex roundabout.
Hi Graham,
Got you !!
Aw Shucks! I thought it was the Handicross roundabout as Cressex Road is a little way around the corner but there you go. As long as you and B&T know what you're talking about cos i'm not going there anyway. :f :f ;)
I see no reason to poke fun, I was being polite. It will always be the Handicross roundabout. It is at Handicross,
Sorry Clarky I'm confused again.
Where do you want us to meet you and at what time?
Do you mean at the roundabout at the end of the A329M where it crosses the A329 and the B3408. The same place we met last year on the Mosel trip?
We'll aim to be there at 5.15pm
...just stay on the 329 til you come to a roundabout in the middle of the road! In other words the next one along from last year. Saves turning off the dual carriageway. Just stop on left side of road. 5.15 is good for me. See you there, I hope :h (still having battery / RR probs in spite of replacing both this week) :h :( :(
PS. Got e mail. typed reply but will rely on this now.

According to ze Meister Plan, ve (sorry, must stop doing cod German, I'm getting far too excited) only do about 60 miles through Toblerones-ville, having fuelled up in Austria, so we should have no need to make the gnomes any richer.
... I've been dying to use those for ages and i knew you would take it in the right spirit, I think. As I said as long as you two know where you're meeting that's the main thing.

I am the headless chicken of Amersham.
Just spent the last three hours walking round in circles trying to pack. :bang: :bang:
I know i have forgotten something....
Anyway ....I'm off down the pub to av a beer.
See you all tomorrow. :D
Christ!! (sorry Godies) Your all so organised, B'sand T's Packed?? I'm still putting my new tax disk on the bike, mending my rain suit (tore it in Yorkshire). Finding the "going to Europe" list. Finding all the documents I have to take (passport). Shouting at the children (that's better).
No clarky, No offence, although I do think it is an interesting anorak debate. I have found the Cressex roundabout. It's just up the road from the (unmentionable one) a bit small in comparison but it is a roundabout.
How are your communications skills with the less that attentive going? I see brian also missed the FIRST ROUNDABOUT ON THE A329M MESSAGE too.
Interestingly I've had that sort of week. You know..... You say..... Please log your time against this project number... He says, (ten days later when you think your well in Budget) "What did you want me to log that time to". Well must get on. See you all tomorrow.
Bill you should here my French allo allo accent even the Germans cringe. But the Dutch love it!!

How many beers you had Chris?
Me - I've just finished writing the last of 56 property reports I had to do before I can go, so am well into a cheepo Chardonnay (bottle, not footballers wife, sadly) watching Later. Preparation so far consists of finding 7 sets of underpants and socks. Bugger it, there's always tomorrow.
Must say Later is fecking excellent tonite. I think I am in love with PJ Harvey...........
I know I will regret writing that tomorrow................ :goofy:

Hi Bill, reading this this morning I have obviously had too much ;)
Well I,m all ready now. Just got the ironing to do and give the kids a smack in case they get up to mischief while I'm away. Dogs not too happy.. See you all on the various roundabouts at 4.45 and 5.15
...if I ain't got it by now I ain't gonna gerrit.
Anyone heard anything from Mark Hutch lately? I assume he's still intending to meet us at the Chunnel Sunday morning.
Battery / charging bus still not 100% confident.... but it will have to do.
