OK I admit it - I'm a BAB (born again biker). Now it's out in the open, I've got nothing else to hide!

Haven't ridden anything since 1980, except for a borrowed ER5 to prove I can still do it, and my recently acquired FL which I've taken up the road on a test run. The AGRO sounds like it could be a larf, but Scarborough is a bit "northern" for lilly livered southerner's like Elaine and myself. Anyone from this neck of the woods going? If so it would be good to meet up and break the ice on a local rideout prior to the the big 'un. I'm off the road (still rebuilding the damaged repairable) until the spring, when I intend to get some miles racked up. And then a track day or two. Then a bit of touring with the missus. Can't wait!

And before you get all concerned, no, I'm not rushing things! First though, I'm driving up to the NEC to hopefully pick up some cut-price gear.

You can leave a post here, email or PM me.

Cheers, Nick.

30 months ago I hadn't ridden anything in 20 years. I only had a CD200 when I was 19.... Got myself a CB500 for a year, clocked up 8000 miles. Purchased the VTEC in June 2002 and have done 20,000 since..........

Don't worry by the time the AGRO comes round you'll be fit to go - and probably the long way round:}

Archie there's alot of us in the south-east and we meet fairly regularly at Box Hill near Dorking. It all slows down for winter but we get out on good days. There will be lots of chances to meet up with other members before the AGRO
With regards the AGRO there will be loads of us southerners going and we usually go in convoy :D It also seems essential that we get split up, lost, and generally confused on the way but that's part of the fun :D
So far we southerners have gone to Macclesfield, Wales, The Lake District, and Cornwall for the club meets. Yes it's been a long journey but it's more fun riding with others and we've always had a great time.
Hope you will both be able to join us and we look forward to meeting you both somewhere in the south-east soon.

The Robster is right though, you are close to Smiffy  :goofy: :D :D

I certainly feel a lot more positive about joining in the fun and games at Scarborough:D

I've emailed Smiffy about both the AGRO and local rideouts, and the box hill meet sound interesting too. Don't worry though, he lives in Bexhill, so I'm protected by a living wall of pensioners! :D :D :D

Now all I've got to do is convince the missus! ;)

Thanks again; see you next year

Mmmmm..............

Well Blade, all I can say, after taking a quick peek at the DOB's of the members participating in this little tete-'a-tete, is that those who occupy glass premises........... Seems to be a glut of old gits participating, myself included. Ladies excluded, of course! :} :} :}

Nick,

Like Jill says, there's tons of us in the saaarf east (me - Eastbourne (don't mention old people :bang:), Smiffy - Bexhill, Eskimo (John) - Worthing, Breakneck (Steve) East Grinstead..ish)...to name but a few + all the Kent members. Some/all of us usually make it up to Box Hill when there's a meet on. The ride up and back (A22/A24 etc etc) from the south coast is excellent - great roads, you are very welcome to join us...

Oh and don't believe a word they say about Smiffy he's a top bloke even if he has got restrictors on his bike! :f :f :f

Archie,

I'm about 10 miles up the A21 from you, near Hurst Green. Look forward to meeting up with you when you get your bike out of dock.

I'm also a first timer on this year's AGRO, but I can recommend the BH rideouts.

What would be a good central meeting point for the southern posse before leaving for Yorkshire in May ? Any suggestions. Perhaps if everyone states where they live then a natural meeting place will materialise.
For starters,I'm in "sunny"Sutton , Surrey

We often meet up at Box Hill as most know where it is and it's near the M25.

That's a good suggestion.
What do you other Southern Posse guys & gals think ? Is Boxhill a convenient meeting place for you, before we go on to Yorkshire ?

It's all a very long time away and I'm sure we'll all get our acts together closer to the date, but FWIW, I would suggest that for anyone in Kent/East Sussex, going via BH and the western M25 with all the LHR bollix makes not a lot of sense.

There are some good ways of getting up to Yorkshire via Dartford and the east, rather than trundling up the M1.

How about an Eastern posse meeting up at, say, Oakdene Cafe nr Wrotham and go on from there?

Just a suggestion.

Thanks Ibbo !
I know that it's a long way off,but it will take some time for people to reply to this thread, and for a "picture" of locations to emerge.
Then,& only then will a natural meeting point emerge.
Like the Grolsch advert, "you can't rush these things". Can't wait to taste that Yorkshire beer !

the Eastern posse can always meet up with us en route, above London somewhere :dunno: . We usually post the route and folk join us at different points along that route. Makes for plenty of tea, toilet, fag breaks.
Like Paul said nearer the time we'll post a route.

Ages away yet I agree but it would be much easier for Sam and I to meet at the Oakdene cafe as Ibbo suggests rather than ride around to Boxhill.
Smudger lives in Paddock Wood (which is only about 10 mins from the Oakdene) so could kill two birds with one stone and hitch up with him there.
Plenty of time as we say, let's not get TOOO excited!

Good idea Jill,
The two groups forming up in the south could of course meet north of London,to form the "Southern Posse" ! Timing permitting naturally.
Apparently, according to a RIDE Biking Atlas of GB,there are lots of great roads to ride on on the way north of London. So once we get off the M25 we'll have fun, fun, fun !
I know that it's a bit early to be discussing these matters, but I'm looking forward to it, & as it's my first long trip on a bike I'm not quite sure of things. That's why I want to discuss it with others who are more experienced and can give some sound advice on what to do and what not.
For instance; I've read elsewhere of ride-out rules to ensure safe riding. Do we have any in this club, because I haven't seen them ? What about the one of the lead rider giving up the lead to the last who overtakes from behind to take over, thus keeping it interesting & not a procession, attention thereby being maintained ?
Any views Mr.Ibbot ?
Viking Viffer .

Fair point - the standard of some of the riding I've seen leaves a lt to be desired!

We don't have any written ride-out rules but I think this should be raised in a separate thread. It's a big issue and worthy of discussion. I've been riding with groups of bikers for nearly two years now and have seen some daft, downright dangerous riding with no thought for consequences or for others that will innocently be involved.
In fact I'll start off another thread.

Jill,
I think the idea we adopted during the ANNI bash was excellent...where the 2nd rider waits at any turn off points for the last man to come through.
As far as I recall we didn't lose anyone during those ride outs
:dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

As I said, we are ages away from the AGRO, but the one thing that ruined last years trip for me was that unless you counted tarmac racing past at 100mph as scenery, we didn't get to see an awful lot of "Gods country".
The run up to the Hartside was brilliant as it was nice and steady with you at the front, but I also think the twisty route had something to do with it. Had the road been a little straighter and faster I think we would have got the inevitible thrash to the front from the fast riders and everybody else then playing "catch up" which in itself will lead to bad riding habits creeping in.
Just my two 'halfpence worth
Rob

Thanks Jill,
That suggestion of a specific thread will be a big help !
Now , where can I find it ? Must have a look.
After Mr.Ibbotson's funny story last week on a ride-out, perhaps he would be so kind as to give us a few pointers ?
Now the next thing to discuss is the route. I'll have a look at that RIDE road atlas & make a few suggestions/questions up that we can talk about. Nothing more boring than being stuck on the motorway for hour after hour.
Like Smiffy says,it would be nice to see some of the scenery, & go at a safe speed . Warp factor 9 should suffice !

I wouldn't presume to give this lot 'pointers', mate. I think they've done a lot more riding around together than you and me...;)

When the time comes, somebody will come along and tell me where to meet and where to go.

I do think you've sparked off a good thread on group riding, though...

Thanks Ibbo,
You're probably right !
Well, if it results in a little thought being given on how to enjoy a ride-out "with the posse" whilst doing this in safety with regard to other riders who may be less experienced, then it will have been a good thing !!
When is the new thread starting,Jill ?

To save me trawling through a very long AGRO thread can someone who is up to speed on what's going on tell me if there would be any chance of getting accommodation (single or shared) at this late stage. I did have alternative hols arranged but its just fallen thru so the AGRO sounds like its an option now. Thanks

Hi gang,
After a good debate on ride-out recommendations and what routes to ride whilst "oop in Yorksire",it's now the turn of a trail to tramp from down south.
Perhaps there are some of you who are more experienced and have already done a trip this way before
So, carrying on then, for the 2 possible southern groups, the Boxhill meet & the Kent/E.London group, where would we firstly meet up north of London ? First service station up the M1 from the M25 junction ?
After this, A421 from J13 to Bedford & B660 to Peterborough.
Then, A15 to Lincoln on north to A631 west to gainsborough & Beckingham,A161 northto Goole.
From there the A614 & A63 towards Selby.
Apart from the mototrway miles, these roads are from The RIDE Biking Atlas Of Britain,so they should be fun !
Here's your starter for 10,no conferring !!!
:f :f :f

She
29-02-2004, 07:23
Rex I suspect some will want the quick route, ie motorway all the way, ans some will want to use the A roads. I'll have a look at what you suggested and start a thread soon.

Thanks for that Jill !
'Aitch suggested that in good weather riders would like the A-roads but in bad weather would take the Motorway to get there asap. Makes sense, I guess.
What do others think ?
