Four of us are planning a trip to the French Alps for about a week,
can anyone suggest a town to base ourselves in with reasonably
priced accomodation?
Here's hoping.
Compared with the UK most accomodation in France is reasonable, it's just everything else thats expensive.

You could try this (http://www.motor-bike-hotels.com/). They are the mob we stayed with in Mosel and they have a hotel in the Alps, Hotel La Neyrette, just of the Route Napoleon.
Or you could try http://www.frenchconnections.co.uk - apartments in ski resorts in the French Alps (British owners) are peanuts at this time of year.
or you could search the accommodation database here

I think you will find staying in one place for a week is too much. Better to split up into two and three night locations. Another way is to try this:-
Sisteron (south of Gap) is a town to start and a base to drop off baggage. Then travelling light you can do Route Napoleon plus Canyon Verdon in one day stopping off around Castallane, complete Route Napoleon the second day stopping at somewhere around Ventimiglia, then get back to Sisterons via Col de Tende N204, Borgo Dalmazzo, Vinadion, Col de la Bonette and a detour to Col de Vars on the third day.
You should love this loop, and the pasta around Tende is unforgetable.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions, there's plenty of info
for me to go on.
Did the area Bucks02 describes a couple of months ago and he's spot on.
The N85 Route Napoleon between Grasse and Digne is a blast. Best place we stayed was the Hotel Kyriad in the old part of Annecy - excellent hotel, reasonably priced with all-u-can eat breakfast.
Good as it is, it's best not to stay in one place too long - for me one of the most enjoyable aspects of touring is the freedom to stay wherever you like when you find somewhere which appeals.
Also, if you've only got a week I'd recommend French Motorail. Used this for the first time this year and it's superb. Leave Calais 17:00, kip in your own comfy bunk after an evening in the 100 mph bar (or was that just my head spinning?) and 10:30 next morning you're up and riding along the French Riviera about an hour from the N85.

Nick,
Could you say what it costs for the return from Dover to Calais
and Calais to wherever (Nice?). I bet it was a bundle !
