Hi All
I am trying to understand the linked Brakes on the 1200 after coming from a BMW.
My understanding is that when you applied the rear brake, pressure is transfered to the front top set of pads on the LH caliper. This seem to be bored out by the LH side having two brake line while the RH as only one.
If this is the case I have a few of questions:
1. When the front brake is applied do all 6 pistons operate.
2. If the rear brake only operates on the LH side does this give uneven pad wear
3. Is there something else going on in the background with the brakes.

You are correct. in answer to your questions
1. No. Six pistons on the right caliper and four on the left.
2. I have not noticed any excessive wear on one side versus the other, but there are four pads on the left caliper as opposed to the regular two. The manual says the smaller pair can be replaced independently which suggests to me that the wear rate is expected to be different.
3. Not sure what you mean. The front brake only works the front, the rear works the front and the rear and all connected and regulated throught the ABS modulator which is located behind the right hand side fairing.
Hope that helps
Just a little bit more...
the pistons in the right caliper are slightly smaller in diameter than the left to compensate for even braking left to right.

Really? That's interesting to know! Someone at the big H put a bit of thought in to that..

The right caliper also uses 4 pads, all controlled by the front brake lever. I believe Honda found that a long pad operated by three pistons just wasn't distributing the pressure across the pads as they wanted.
I've noticed some auto racing Nissin 8 piston calipers using 4 pads, each operated by two pistons. In fact I think most do

Hi
Thanks for the responses, the more you look at the braking setup, the more you can see that honda put some thought into the design.
The right caliper has 6 pistons each of 25mm dia using 2 small pad and 2 large pads.
While the left caliper is a totally diffirent device, also with 6 pistons, 2 small pads and 2 large pads, but the top pistons are 27 mm dia, the centre pistons are 30mm dia and the bottom are 27mm dia.
SO looking at the piston areas the left is larger than the right. ??
