Default 1996 RS1100 SE Poor running

On Monday, my bike (62000) was running fine except I thought the oil temp was reading wrong it was running rich when starting. However two up it was riding excellently. Later I changed the oil temp switch, and cleaned the almost new plugs. This seemed to fix the temp reading, but the bike was running very poorly, even backfiring, I swapped the temp switch back, but no change. If you hold the bike on idle, it seems to caugh frequently. I checked it in the dark for HT jumps - thinking of failing leads. I don't think it is synchrisation as the bike was running so well on the run earlier in the week. There is very little to remove when I moved the petrol tank for access to the oil temp switch, so I can think of nothing i have upset.

I asked in an earlier post, I've seen there are a few of you in the Scotland /Edinburgh/Fife area - if i need to get an independant guy to look at the bike, have you any recommendations. Someone who didn't mind me waiting, as transpost is difficult. It isn't possible for me to get to dealers and leave it for a day with them, apart from the money, I really need the bike every day to get to work. - I'm from the Kinross area.
I'm a good enough mechanic - have rebuilt an old Jaguar, but I am not good at fuel Injection / engine electrics diagnostics. - though i'd like to learn. I love the bike so much, but i can't bear to ride it the way it is just now. Was a lovely day for a run today too.

Thanks - Alastair Lauener

Default R1100 poor running

Alastair
Badly out of sync throttles will cause this and as you have recently removed the tank, I would check that first.

I did check the throttle cable under the tank, and the pulley wheels appear to be moving exactly the same time when son moved the throttle, so I don't think that has jammed anywhere. The bike does idel, a trifle slower than normal, but a 'coughing' noise comes from the soilencer area. I'm thinking perhaps an HT cable has partially failed in a way that it does not short to earth - the engine does seem to run OK, but caughs or misses, thus not burning the fuel, and then backfiring when on the over run.

Alastair, there is a guy called metal ken who is based near Edinborough who has just signed up as a new member on the bmriders forum who appears to be an independant bm man near you. Hope this helps.
