Newbie technical question:
I have not changed motocycle brake pads before. In the sources I have to check how much is left on the pads the instructions are to remove the caliper and examine from the side facing the axle. However, on all three calipers I can see the pads from the rear of the caliper as it is on the bike. The rotor comes up to the end of the pad and it appears I am looking at the pads (which look fine, thick enough). Now, I am actually seeing the wear surface of the pad, or part of the backing? Can anyone post a pic showing my error or if this is OK? |

Do you have an 1100 or an 1150 ? Certainly on the 1150, you can check the pad wear visually, it tells you how to in one of the handbooks you get with the bike.

I have the R1100RS. The two manuals, more like brochures, only state the pads should be checked and one has the min remaining pad, but neither mentions how.

On the rear, if you can't see the pads just remove the cover from the caliper. Estimate the space between the backing plate and the disc, and that's the amount of material you have left. On the front, you should be able to see the material from the front of the bike.

In addition to what Anton said, you can easily tell the 1/4" metal backing plate from the pad surface.

OK, I got it now. I must purchase a short metric ruler (I used to have one) to help estimate the material remaining, but it is at least twice the 1.5 mm minimum. Thanks.
