Well as you can see, the options to the new services are now available at the top of the screen. I thought that I’d write a few notes here to try and help you get the most from them.
Let me start by apolgising to our American cousins - At the moment, the map only covers Europe. I hope that will change one day, but it's not going to be in the next few weeks. I'm sorry.
Here is the concept behind the map:
There is a lot of information that gets lost in the forums and that isn’t always easy to find with the search facility. People often ask “where can I get cheap types near me” or where shall we meet for that ride-out and you have to go trawling though old threads to get the information. Sometimes people would like to know what other members live near them so that they can meet up for a ride out and that isn’t available.
The Bikers’ Map is designed to put all that information at your fingertips. It’s is a zoomable, interactive road map, which covers the whole of Europe right down to street level! Using the search facility on the left hand side of the map, you can find a whole host of different points of interest (POIs) that have been recommended by other members. These include things like: Sunday morning meeting places, Biker friendly cafés, great roads to ride (with downloadable maps and GPS routes), cheap places to buy tyres, you can even see which other members live near you, so you can meet up for a blast. All the POIs on the map have been recommended by other members, so you get genuine, unbiased recommendations, made fellow bikers. When you chose a POI, the name of the member who recommended it along with a short review appears on the right of the map, so you can get further information. You can then add your own review if you’d like to either agree or disagree with the member who first recommended it.
Just click search and then choose the type of POI you’d like to find. Then key in your full post code and hit “go”. A list of entries will appear in the left column, you can then click on each one to see it on the map and more details on the right.
The map is for bikers to share information. It YOUR place to build up a fantastic resorce for everyone to use. If you have a favourite café that you use, or road that you ride, or if you know where to get a great deal on tyres, don’t keep it to yourself! Use the “Add POI” function to let other members know about it. That way we’ll all be helping each other get the most from biking.
There are just 3 types of POI that are available only to Sponsors of the site. They are:
Other members locations.
Downloadable ride-out routes.
Regular Meeting Places.
All the other are free to use. The reason for this is that the map cost a huge amount to develop and there are ongoing costs to pay for the use of the road data so we need to encourage people to contribute something of we want to map to stay. I hope that you will see it is an awesome resource and will be well worth keeping and developing further.
A few technical notes:
The map has been extensively tested with Internet Explorer but not with other browsers. It should work but we know there are some issues with Firefox.
When you first visit the map, you will have to log on using your existing username and password. At that point, you will be taken to a larger screen which will ask you to update you record with your name address etc. This is so that your account can be used throughout all the new facilities and you only have to enter it once.
I will write more about the other facilities in a short while, in the meantime, I hope that you enjoy what you see and take some time out to contribute to the map. Please, at the very least, add yourself as a member!
