Please tell me if I have this right:

R1100S: Sport
R1100RS: Sport Touring
R1100RT: Touring
R1100GS: Dual Sport
R1100RSL: ???
:dunno:

 Not exactly sure about that pesky "L" although the RSL's have lower fairing panels and the RS's do not. Of course, the RSL's are faster, especially the red ones... :D

You got it.

L=Lowers

Lower fairing sounds good to me. I got one of those!

RSL's were the premium RS model in their day: they came with ABS, color-matched system cases, and the previously-mentioned full bodywork.

And yes, the red ones are the fastest... :D

That doesn't account for the R1100RL (2001 model). It has neither lower fairing nor ABS.

That L stands for LOST fairing!

It isn't like a HD, the letters make no sense in English.

This is decisively proved by the Einsteinian space/time/handlebar equations.

My R1100RS(L) does not have colour matched cases, it has the textured finish black lids. Perhaps not part of the L package here in Canada. In fact I have yet to see A Canadian RS with matching lids.

I think that the L in 2001 stood for Limited , as in the life of the bike at that time...BMW was going to do it in due to poor sales

I have recently purchased a 96 R1100RSL and it has the black cases also.

I only know about the US models... I'm not sure what was offered in other countries. Is the full-fairing still offered in Canada? It was only available here in the US for a short time.

If "Cleveland" is in Ohio, USA, only the RSLs had fairing lowers. If "Cleveland" is in Yorkshire, UK, all RSs have fairing lowers. If "Cleveland" is somewhere else, I have absolutely no idea. :goofy:

From this day foward the RSL designation will mean lower fairing in the US only.

And White is the fastest color because white is all colors combined.

Ahhh.. Yes, but if that is true, is white truely "A" color???

Um, isn't white the absence of any color? Maybe that explains it - it's faster because the paint is lighter!

on the black vs. red ?

Red has no black pigment in its color; in contrast black is a combination of all colors which includes red thus giving black a boost in speed. Without red, there would be no black...however it's all those other colors such as Pearl White and Baby Blue that slow the black ones down :D

I thought white was all colors and black was no color? Like when you make a rainbow with a prism?

I do like the "white is lighter thoery" though

If you consider colour as light, then black is the absence of light - there are no electromagnetic waves. So black could be considerd as the absence of colour. White light is a jumble of wave lengths so could be considered all colours.

If you are talking about paint, then black paint contains lots of pigments, perhaps including red and blue etc. I believe white paint contains fewer pigments.

Thought. Have you seen that novelty device made up of a glass ball that has been evacuated (all air removed from inside) but has four paddles that spin freely? Each paddle is painted black on the one side and white on the other. Light waves that hit the black side get absorbed. Light waves that hit the white side get reflected causing an inverse and opposite reaction (the paddles spin around on a pivot). I conclude that the fastest colour combination has to be a black front and a white rear.

 Great observation! I think I'll repaint my bike this weekend! As an added bonus, a black and white bike may be mistaken for a police bike by the casual observer (in Texas anyway), thus perhaps granting the rider a modicum more respect from the average cage jockey!

Would that bike go slower then if riden into the sun?

Dee Duble Yuh
11-09-2004, 07:27 AM
Definitely. If you do a round-the-world trip, head west at high speed so the sun remains behind you just pushing you along. You'll probably be able to switch your engine off and coast down the road.

Oh, and start off from the top of tall mountain too.

I was wondering because you guys were on the topic of the difference between an RS and an RSL, if you could help me out and identify this bike for me... i think its an RSL? but what year?  ...my self-defense in not knowing, is that i'm only 17

That's a K1200 RS.

The way you can tell an R-series bike is there is a cylinder sticking out of each side of the fairing (or below the fairing for you -R, -S and -C fans out there.)

Just to confuse the issue even further, my understanding was that the RS has no lower fairing but the RS SE did (does) - perhaps this is just UK designations? The odd thing is that in MCN last week there was an 1150 advertised as "to SE spec" - now what might that be? :bang:
