HT Coil Problem

I have had a problem with a rough idle on my '02 1150RS recently which I tracked down to a crcked HT lead. I ordered a new lead and have just fitted it, but on trying to start the bike it is only going on one cylinder. I have checked the new lead and it is OK. By looking at the spark at cranking speed it looks like the spark on the side that had the HT lead problem is noticably weaker. Would the lead problem cause the coil to degrade?

Looks like I need a new coil as well! but if any one has any ideas or advice that would be welcome.

By HT Lead do you mean spark plug wire? If so, I would try swapping the wires to see if the problem goes to the other cylinder. You could also try swapping the plug wire leads at the coil and see if the problem stays with the bad side of the coil.

Thanks. I have checked the coil by swapping leads and one side is definitely weaker than the other, so I decided to get a new coil anyway.

Whilst I had the tank off I decided to change the fuel filter as the bike has done 27k and I know it hasn't been done - what a fiddly job! I can see why an external filter conversion is attractive if you do a high mileage. Having said that there didn't seem to be anything much wrong with the old filter and I guess you could keep it in a lot longer unless you have had problems with water or dirt in the tank. I won't be rushing to change it again!!
