Hi RS Folk,
In the quest for a quiet life ,I picked up a standard screen with the lip cut off and its provided me (6Foot1) with a cleaner airflow and a slightly quieter ride.(I just didn't want to cut my original down!)
I want to know if anyone has cut the thing down to say half size and what the result was.I note that a lot of modern bikes seem to have a different type of screen that is cut slightly lower in the center. Also I,m temped to remove it and see what its like without one at all but I dont seem to get arround to it.etc etc........
Very interested to see what folks have tried
Cheers and stay lucky

I cut an after market shield down. Eliminating the flip at the top of the shield works wonders. I then cut the shield a little further untiil my head road in that clean ..non-turbulent ...stream of air. {You can find the maximum height that gives you that quiet air stream by first cutting off the lip. Then take the bike for a ride...raising your head/ body higher till you are in that quiet air stream. If it has required you to rise 1"" off your seat...cut an inch off the wind screen}.
Additionally...I wear ear plugs. A very quiet satisying ride. Have ridden 800 miles in a day...comfortably...no wind turbulence around the head.
The shorter wind screen keeps the wind off of my chest.
Plus a shorter wind screen makes the bike look better...a little more streamlined.l
I cut an original screen down by half the height, then painted the inside black to reduce the light on the gauges on very bright days. Yes I got blown around more by turbulance from trucks and the like but it became my "summer habit" to use that screen (picture here (http://www.bikersoracle.com/rs/forum/showthread.php?t=88)).

That looks quite sporty, Ray. I'm glad I still kept my original screen after fitting the Aeroflow.
Now where did I put that hacksaw . . .?? :)

Instead of cutting my screen down, I opted for the ZTechnic screen. It has the lower curve in the center as discussed. It did cut down the noise some, but what it really did was smooth things out dramatically. I can now ride with the shield in almost any position and not get bounced around all the time. I've kind of become convinced that part of the noise problem is my Schuberth helmet. At any rate, the ZTechnic and a pair of earplugs made the bike MUCH more comfortable at all speeds.

.....just last Sunday, I took the stock screen from my 02 RRS and cut exactly 2" off the screen ......needless to say, it is the improvement BMW should have done years ago. When I bought my bike, I immediately ordered a Cee Bailey's 2+ x 2+ for my bike....nice sreen for cool weather but noisey in almost every mode. I knew the answer wasn't in a monster screen but a lower screen that would spread the air across my chest but leave my head in clean air, like a VFR. And it does work....alot of air across my chest but my head is in clean air.....and the air on my chest just helps the ventilation on my summer leather jacket. I called Cee Bailey's and they would be willing to make one of theirs like this for no additional charge and I am contemplating having them make me a 2" wider but 2" shorter than a new stock 1150 screen in a dark smoke tint....this would be my summer /early fall screen an the 2 + x 2 + my fall/winter/early spring screen. For those of you who HATE the wind noise and buffeting, this really works. Should I decide to do the Bailey's , I will sell the stock screen here.

Hi
I've been thinking about the loss of the lip on the screen (cut down 3cm) I am using as I drove 300 miles in the rain yesterday .Yes I must be mad!
Next time I go out I'm planning to remove the screen altogether just to see what the wind noise is like...
I will let you know.
Cheers
