The only thing I'd say about straps is that if anything shifts they can slacken a surprising amount. Bungees, by their nature, tend to cope better with shifts. Of course straps allow less shift in the first place, but be aware.

With the gear indicator did you have to splice into the wiring loom to fit it?

No, look at photo 6, where there are four plugs, there used to be two, I ordered more of the same connector blocks an made a plug an play unit as I don't believe in cuttin into loom or changin bike in any way, so should I ever want to sell, I can unplug an connect original blocks back together.
(an use toys on next bike)
I am goin to pass info onto fink should anyone else with a 2001 onwards want plug & play unit, he said he will be happy to supply peeps.

Thanks for warnin on straps taz, i'll take bungees as back up in case it moves

This is the bit I was having most trouble working out with mine

My Oxford Lifetime panniers came with these straps in a separate baggy but I couldn't work out how they went on. They kind of rubber but not bungee. I guess to try and have some give but not to let stuff flap about.

Now all becomes clear

This Sunday is pannier test day for me! I know they fit OK, but haven't ridden with them full of anything. Tank bag works fine now that magnetic strip is under the plastic tank cover.

Like the way you have sorted out your gear indicator, looks good. You will be running out of available space before long.

Man after my own heart I was wondering what the photo of the connectors was.
