Default Ram Mount - whats the ball size for the standard Zumo 550 Mount?

Hiya All,

I'm going to ty that "2 short arms, with a double ball between them" idea.

Whats the ball size though? 1" or 1.5"?

I see 2 on offer:
http://www.ram-mount.co.uk/double-1-...er-p-1013.html
and
http://www.ram-mount.co.uk/double-15...ter-p-995.html

Hope you can advise

Bit late at night, don't fancy nipping into the garage and measuring the Ram mount ball sizes!

Cheers
Martin

Thanks Chas,

PS:
How have you found this Arm arrangement? Just as stable as one long Arm?

Got a long arm when I bought my Garmin Quest in 2007. This was fine with my tank bag expanded but stuck up quite a long way with the tank bag in it's compressed state, with out the tank bag it was ridiculously tall.

That resulting in me buying a 3" (medium arm).

When I purchased my StreetPilot 2720 I got one of the short 1 3/4" arms and a double ball joining piece. These combined with the 3" arm give great flexibility as you then have an articulated joint in the middle that makes the mount much more adaptable. You can straighten it for maximum length/height or bend to reduce as needed.

As I mount to the front tank bolts the resulting length is just right on my VTEC with my Baglux Minea tank bag. The CBR6 may vary and if using a stem mount you might be better off combining two 1 3/4" arms. It's a case of measuring up and checking.

Have yet to mount my new Zumo 660, I might need to make some changes.

So far the RAM system has provided solid mounting with very little vibration. My original 5 1/4" arm was the worst but not unacceptable.

If mounting on the front tank bolts then use Wiz's guide on this matter, if you don't get it right it'll flap around.

Hi Chas,

Thanks for that!
Erm.... will check how I got it bolted onto Petrol tank?!!?

Am I missing something about why people mount onto petrol tank bolts, instead of the steering stem?

I did it for vibration reasons for the CBR600

On some bikes it fits neatly on the front petrol tank bolts. Particularly Viffers and CBR6s.

On others the steering stem's easier, like 954s. The thing I had on MeEx600 wouldn't fit Me954.

As Spikey says, some bikes (Hondas, not sure about any others) have the convenient, and coincidental, mounting points between tank and headstock, some don't.

With mounting on frame the sat nav stays stationary in relation to the fairing, fairing mounted clocks and tank-bag on my Viffer. Mounting in the steering stem means that the sat nav will move relative to the fairing, should all fit in so long as it's in the correct position (and you test it lock to lock) but is more likely to obscure clocks, especially if you use a tank bag.

I have mine pushed against the front of my tank bag. If it were mounted on, and moving with, the top yoke I'd need to allow extra clearance and hence move the sat nav forward over the clocks.

Different bikes and set-ups vary the available space. You'll need to asses this yourself in accordance with your needs.
